This April, we are celebrating Earth Day by challenging our students to turn “trash” into tunes.
We want you to hunt for recycled or found materials (think tin cans, cereal boxes, rubber bands, bottle caps, or cardboard tubes) and engineer your very own, on-of-a-kind musical instrument.
Why Earth Day Matters
Earth Day is a global reminder that we only have one home, and it is our job to protect it. In the music world, sustainability means being mindful of the resources we use, from the wood in our pianos to the energy that powers our amps.
By upcycling materials into instruments, we are:
Reducing Waste- Keeping plastic and metal out of landfills.
Repurposing Resources- Giving new life to items that were “done” serving their purpose.
Refocusing our Ears- Learning that harmony exists in nature and in the everyday objects around us.
